Letter from Francis Napier, 8th Lord Napier, to Mary Hamilton
Diplomatic Text
Welwyn, 31st: August 1781.
When I last troubled Miʃs
Hamilton with a letter, I mentioned an
Application I had made to the King to be
appointed D. Adjutant General in Scotland.
I have this morning been informed that
my request has not been granted. I have
not the presumption to suppose that She
will feel herself in the least degree interested
in anything that concerns me -- if She had
felt a wish for my succeʃs, She would probably,
before this, have pardoned an unintentional
Neglect. I can only add, that I ever had the
greatest esteem & regard for Miʃs Hamilton
& that I experience the deepest concern at
her having ceased to treat me as her
Friend & Brother

Letter Description
Summary: Letter from Francis Napier, 8th Lord Napier, to Mary Hamilton, concerning a
disagreement between Napier and Hamilton. Napier notes that when he last
wrote to Hamilton he mentioned that he had presented an application to the
King for his appointment as Deputy Adjutant General in Scotland. This has not been
granted. Napier supposes that she is will not be concerned as, if she wished
for his success, she would have, before this date, pardoned 'an
unintentional neglect'. He expresses his concern that Hamilton no longer
treats him as 'her friend & Brother'.
Dated at Welwyn [Hertfordshire].

All quotation marks are retained in the text and are represented by appropriate Unicode characters. Words split across two lines may have a hyphen on the first, the second or both fragments (reco-|ver, imperfect|-ly, satisfacti-|-on); or a double hyphen (pur=|port, dan|=ger, qua=|=litys); or none (respect|ing). Any point in abbreviations with superscripted letter(s) is placed last, regardless of relative left-right orientation in the original. Thus, Mrs. or Mrs may occur, but M.rs or Mr.s do not.
